What to Wear Birding — Starting With the Brim
Birds notice movement and contrast long before they notice you. Dress to disappear into the habitat, layer for a morning that starts cold and ends warm, and keep your hands free for the binoculars. The same rules hold on the trail, at the campsite and on the drive home.
Colors the birds won't notice
- Muted earth tones: olive, sand, stone and bark blend into cover; save the bright colors for the parking lot.
- Skip white: it reads as a flash of movement from across a field.
- Matte over shiny: soft, matte fabrics don't catch the light the way shiny technical gear can.
Brim, crown and the kind of morning it is
- A curved brim shades your eyes and cuts glare off the binoculars — the safe pick for open water and long sightlines.
- A flat brim sits higher and stays clear when you are craning up into the canopy.
- Knit for the cold start, mesh for the warm finish: a beanie on a frozen dawn, a mesh back once the sun clears the treeline.
Small details that matter in the field
- A brimmed hat cuts glare off the binoculars and keeps the sun off the back of your neck.
- Long sleeves and pants in tick season; tuck them if you're off-trail.
- Somewhere to keep the field notebook. A pocket counts.
