Field notes
What to Wear Birding — and Everywhere Outside
Birds notice movement and contrast long before they notice you. Dress to disappear into the habitat, layer for a morning that starts cold and ends warm, and keep your hands free for the binoculars. The same rules hold on the trail, at the campsite and on the drive home.
Colors the birds won't notice
- Muted earth tones: olive, sand, stone and bark blend into cover; save the bright colors for the parking lot.
- Skip white: it reads as a flash of movement from across a field.
- Matte over shiny: garment-dyed cotton doesn't catch the light the way technical fabrics can.
Dress for the dawn, plan for noon
- Start with a heavyweight tee that holds its shape under a pack strap or binocular harness.
- Add a light mid-layer you can stuff in the pack once the sun clears the treeline.
- Carry a shell if the forecast wavers — a wet morning is still a birding morning.
Small details that matter in the field
- A brimmed hat cuts glare off the binoculars and keeps the sun off the back of your neck.
- Long sleeves and pants in tick season; tuck them if you're off-trail.
- Somewhere to keep the field notebook. A pocket counts.
